When to Visit Bhutan

Bhutan is a year-round destination, but the experience changes dramatically with the seasons. Here is what to expect through the year so you can choose the time that suits you best.

Spring (March–May)

The classic season. Clear, mild days, valleys carpeted with rhododendrons and wildflowers, and the spectacular Paro Tshechu. Excellent for trekking and photography. This is peak season, so book well ahead.

Summer (June–August)

Warm and intensely green, with the monsoon — usually short afternoon downpours rather than all-day rain. Fewer visitors, lush landscapes and dramatic skies make it ideal for culture, textiles and travellers who prefer quieter valleys.

Autumn (September–November)

Crisp, dry and clear, with the best Himalayan views of the year and the great festivals of Thimphu and Punakha. Along with spring, this is the most popular time to visit.

Winter (December–February)

Cold in the highlands but bright and quiet, with deep-blue skies. The warm southern belt is perfect for birding, and the Punakha Drubchen and Tshechu fall in February. A wonderful time for travellers who like to have the dzongs almost to themselves.
