Lhuentse

Ancestral home of the royal dynasty

  • Lhuentse Dzong
  • Khoma village weaving (kishuthara)
  • Takila Guru Rinpoche statue
  • Remote riverside valleys

Lhuentse is one of the most remote, traditional and culturally rich districts in Bhutan, tucked away in the far north-east. Rugged and thickly forested, with scattered villages perched high above deep river valleys, it feels wonderfully removed from the modern world.

It is the ancestral homeland of Bhutan's royal Wangchuck dynasty and the country's most celebrated weaving region: the exquisite kishuthara silk textiles woven in villages such as Khoma are among the finest handicrafts in the kingdom. Lhuentse Dzong stands dramatically above the Kuri Chhu, and the towering Takila statue of Guru Rinpoche watches over the valley.

For travellers drawn to authentic culture, master craftsmanship and genuinely off-the-beaten-path adventure, Lhuentse is one of eastern Bhutan's great rewards.
