Pemagatshel, meaning "the blissful land of the lotus", is a small, hilly district in south-eastern Bhutan. Well off the main tourist trail, it is a region of broadleaf forest, scattered villages and strong living traditions where visitors are still a rare and welcome sight.
The district is known for the dramatic cliffside monastery of Yongla Goenpa, an important pilgrimage site with commanding views over the surrounding hills, and for its skilled weavers, whose textiles are prized across the country. The landscape ranges from cool forested ridges to warmer valleys, with the growing town of Nganglam near the southern border.
For travellers venturing deep into eastern Bhutan, Pemagatshel offers authentic culture, sacred sites and quiet, unspoilt scenery far from the crowds.
