Thimphu is the capital of Bhutan and the beating heart of the kingdom — famously the only national capital in the world without a single traffic light. Set in a forested valley at around 2,334 metres, it is a fascinating meeting of the traditional and the modern, where monks in crimson robes share the streets with cafés, boutiques and contemporary art galleries.
Key sights include the majestic Tashichho Dzong, seat of the government and the golden throne, and the towering 51-metre Buddha Dordenma statue gazing out over the valley. Visitors can meet the national animal at the Motithang Takin Preserve, wander the lively Centenary Farmers' Market, spin the wheels at Changangkha Lhakhang, and shop for handwoven textiles, thangkas and handicrafts.
As the cultural hub of the country, Thimphu also hosts the spectacular autumn Thimphu Tshechu, one of the largest festivals in Bhutan. It is the natural base for exploring western Bhutan and the ideal place to understand how the kingdom balances Gross National Happiness with rapid, careful change.
