While most visitors fly into Paro, Bhutan can also be entered overland from India. This suits travellers combining Bhutan with north-east India, or those who enjoy the dramatic climb from the plains up into the Himalaya.
The three border gateways
- Phuentsholing (south-west) — the busiest and most convenient crossing, around 4–5 hours from Bagdogra airport and the Siliguri and Jaigaon area. From here it is a scenic half-day drive up to Thimphu and Paro.
- Gelephu (south-central) — a quieter crossing giving access to central Bhutan, now being developed as part of the ambitious Gelephu Mindfulness City.
- Samdrup Jongkhar (south-east) — the gateway to eastern Bhutan, near Guwahati in Assam; ideal for finishing an east-to-west journey.
What to know
Overland entry requires exactly the same visa or permit, tour booking and Sustainable Development Fee as flying in. We arrange your border formalities and have your guide and vehicle ready to meet you at the gate. Roads are winding and driving days can be long, so we plan comfortable stops and realistic distances along the way.
