Bumthang

The spiritual heartland

  • Jambay & Kurjey Lhakhangs
  • Jakar Dzong
  • Membar Tsho (Burning Lake)
  • Ura Yakchoe festival
  • Bumthang Owl Trek

Bumthang is the spiritual heartland of Bhutan, a region of four broad, sacred valleys — Chokhor, Tang, Ura and Chhume — where Buddhism first took root in the country. Higher and cooler than the western valleys, it is a landscape of apple orchards, alpine forest, buckwheat fields and some of the oldest and holiest temples in the kingdom.

Highlights include the ancient Jambay and Kurjey Lhakhangs, the imposing Jakar Dzong that watches over the main valley, and the sacred Membar Tsho, the "Burning Lake" of Bhutanese legend. Bumthang is also known for its cottage industries — cheese, honey, apple products and the country's only brewery — and for wonderful valley walks such as the gentle Bumthang Owl Trek.

Deeply atmospheric and steeped in myth and pilgrimage, Bumthang hosts some of the most vivid festivals in the country, including the Jambay Lhakhang Drup with its midnight naked dance and the colourful Ura Yakchoe. For travellers seeking the soul of Bhutan, central Bhutan's Bumthang is unmissable.
