Trashigang is the largest district in Bhutan and the bustling commercial heart of the east, spread across steep hillsides above the Gamri Chhu. Historically an important hub on the trade route to Tibet, it remains the liveliest town in eastern Bhutan.
Its landmark Trashigang Dzong perches on a spur high above the river, guarding the town for centuries and offering commanding views. The district is the gateway to the semi-nomadic Brokpa communities of Merak and Sakteng, whose unique dress, dialect and yak-herding culture are unlike anywhere else in the country, as well as to the sacred Gom Kora temple and the hillside Rangjung monastery.
Warm, welcoming and rich in living tradition, Trashigang is the essential base for exploring the far east of Bhutan and the remote valleys that surround it.
