Punakha

The old capital between two rivers

  • Punakha Dzong (the most beautiful in Bhutan)
  • Chimi Lhakhang (fertility temple)
  • Punakha Suspension Bridge
  • Punakha Drubchen & Tshechu (February)
  • Rice paddies and river rafting

Punakha, the ancient capital of Bhutan until 1955, lies in a warm, fertile valley at just 1,200 metres — a welcome escape, especially in the cooler months. Fed by two rivers, the Pho Chhu and the Mo Chhu, it is among the most scenic and historically significant destinations in the kingdom.

Its centrepiece is the magnificent Punakha Dzong, the "Palace of Great Happiness", set dramatically on an island where the two rivers meet and widely regarded as the most beautiful dzong in Bhutan. Nearby, a gentle stroll through rice paddies leads to Chimi Lhakhang, the famous fertility temple of the Divine Madman, while the long Punakha suspension bridge and white-water rafting on the rivers add a dash of adventure.

The valley still serves as the winter residence of Bhutan's monastic body and comes gloriously alive during the Punakha Drubchen and Tshechu each February. Warm winters, sub-tropical river valleys and living history make Punakha a highlight of any Bhutan itinerary.
