Dagana

Remote forests and an old hilltop dzong

  • Daga Trashiyangtse Dzong
  • Forested southern hills
  • Traditional villages
  • Off-the-trail travel

Dagana is a quiet, heavily forested district in southern Bhutan and one of the least-visited corners of the kingdom. Its terrain sweeps from cool mountains bordering Thimphu down to warm subtropical plains near the Indian border, giving the district a remarkable range of climates and biodiversity.

Dagana is centred on the historic Daga Trashiyangtse Dzong, founded in the 17th century on a commanding hilltop. Traditional villages, terraced fields and unspoilt broadleaf forest define the landscape, and the area is known for its ancient stone megaliths and rich birdlife.

With growing efforts by the authorities to develop sustainable, low-impact tourism, Dagana rewards intrepid travellers with genuine village life, quiet forest walks and a real sense of discovery far from the main routes.
