Bhutan Entry Requirements

Everything that has to be in place before you land: the visa and SDF, the flights and the land borders, insurance, and what customs will ask about.

Bhutan asks more of a visitor before arrival than most countries and less of them afterwards. There is no visa queue at the airport: the paperwork is filed weeks earlier by the operator you booked with, and you land with your clearance already issued.

This section covers what has to be in place before you fly — the tourist visa and the Sustainable Development Fee, arriving by air into Paro or overland from India, insurance, and what customs asks about.

Who does what

  • Your operator files the visa application against your paid trip, holds your flights, and arranges the permits for anywhere that needs one.
  • You send a passport valid six months beyond your dates, take out travel insurance, and check that nothing you are packing needs declaring.

The one that catches people out is insurance. Treatment in Bhutan is free at the point of use and good for a country this size, but the terrain means anything serious involves a flight out — and a trek to 4,000 metres sits outside the altitude limit on many standard policies.

The pages below cover each requirement in full. If you would rather we simply told you what applies to your passport and your dates, send us both.
