Chorten Kora and the winter cranes

  • Chorten Kora stupa
  • Bomdeling Wildlife Sanctuary (cranes Nov–Feb)
  • Traditional dapa wooden-bowl craft
  • Institute of Zorig Chusum

Trashiyangtse is a small, scenic district in the far north-east of Bhutan, a place of forested hills, clear rivers and deep spiritual significance. Once an important stop on old trade routes, it is now treasured for its heritage crafts and pristine natural beauty.

Its most famous landmark is Chorten Kora, a large white stupa modelled on Nepal's Boudhanath and the focus of a vibrant annual festival that draws pilgrims from across the region and beyond. The district is also the home of Bhutan's traditional wooden-bowl (dapa) craft and of the National Institute for Zorig Chusum, which teaches the thirteen traditional arts.

Nearby, Bomdeling Wildlife Sanctuary shelters wintering black-necked cranes and rich Himalayan wildlife. Remote, beautiful and culturally distinctive, Trashiyangtse is a highlight of any journey through eastern Bhutan.
