Because tourism in Bhutan is organised around private, guided programmes, your transport is arranged for you from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave — you never have to work out how to get around.
Your private vehicle
Every tour includes a comfortable private vehicle with a professional, English-speaking guide and an experienced driver. The vehicle is matched to your group — a car or SUV for couples and small parties, a van or coaster bus for larger groups. This is by far the most comfortable and flexible way to travel Bhutan's steep, winding mountain roads, and it lets you stop for photos, tea or a short hike whenever you like.
Domestic flights and public options
For longer itineraries, domestic flights link Paro with Bumthang in the centre, Gelephu in the south and Yonphula in the east, saving a full day or more of driving. Public buses and shared taxis do run between towns and are inexpensive, but they are slow, crowded and not geared to visitors, so they rarely feature in a tour. Roads are generally good but journeys take longer than the distances suggest, so we plan realistic driving days with plenty of breaks.
