Bhutan's big daily temperature swings and its mix of activities mean that layering is the key to packing well. Here is what we recommend bringing.
Clothing
- Light, breathable layers for warm days, plus a warm fleece or down jacket for cool mornings, evenings and high passes.
- A waterproof, windproof jacket — useful in any season and essential in summer.
- Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes or light hiking boots for temple courtyards and hikes such as the Tiger's Nest.
- Modest clothing for temples and dzongs: long trousers or a long skirt and tops that cover the shoulders.
Essentials and extras
- High-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat — the high-altitude sun is strong.
- A personal medical kit and any prescription medication, plus altitude and stomach remedies.
- A universal power adapter and a power bank.
- A refillable water bottle, with a filter or purification tablets if you plan to trek.
- Binoculars for birds and mountain views, and a good camera.
Pack light — laundry is available in most hotels, and you will want room to bring home a textile or two.
